The difference between the McCarthy hearings and Maher’s appearance is there’s no reason to believe any of those past witnesses were lying about what they believed. Unless you believe that Maher was an extremely doctrinaire institutional progressive and has completely changed her worldview (without tweeting any of her NEW beliefs, or being able to account for the changes) than Maher lied about EVERYTHING she believes. I think a case can easily be made that NPR no longer reflects the mainstream, but the more interesting question is whether having a shamelessly dishonest CEO, whose entire life and career has dropped with hypocrisy, good for any organization. If she’d just been honest about what she believes and what she’s done I would’ve been impressed. Sadly, appearances like those of the witnesses who stood up against Senator McCarthy are rare these days. No one cares about integrity. They only want the lies you tell to accord with or protect their worldview.
